British Shorthair

The plush, dignified teddy bear of the cat world.

The British Shorthair is one of the oldest pedigreed cat breeds, traced back to the working cats of ancient Rome's occupation of Britain. Today's British Shorthair is known for its round face, dense plush coat, calm dignified personality, and the famous "British blue" — a solid blue-gray coat with copper-orange eyes that made the breed an icon. They are quiet, even-tempered, and remarkably patient — never demanding, never destructive. At Pet Therapy Cattery, our British Shorthair kittens are raised in our Southern California family home with HCM and PKD screening on every breeding pair.

History & origin

The British Shorthair traces its ancestry to cats brought to Britain by the Romans around 2,000 years ago to control vermin. Over centuries these working cats developed into a robust, weather-hardy breed. In the late 1800s, English breeder Harrison Weir formalized the breed — his 1871 cat show at London's Crystal Palace is widely credited as the start of the modern cat fancy, and the British Shorthair was the featured breed. World War II nearly wiped out the breed, but careful post-war recovery (with limited Persian outcrossing) restored the population. The British Shorthair was recognized by CFA in 1980 and remains one of the most popular pedigreed breeds in the UK and increasingly in the US.

Personality & temperament

British Shorthairs are calm, dignified, and famously low-maintenance personality-wise. They are affectionate but not clingy — they enjoy your company in the same room but rarely demand to be held or carried. They tolerate solitude better than most breeds, making them ideal for working professionals or families with busy schedules. They get along well with children (who treat them respectfully), other cats, and dogs. British Shorthairs are not loud — their voice is quiet and they use it sparingly. They are also not particularly athletic; they prefer dignified walks to acrobatic jumps and are happy to nap on a sunny windowsill for hours.

Appearance & colors

The British Shorthair has a stocky, "cobby" body type — round head, full cheeks, broad chest, short thick neck, and short sturdy legs. The coat is short but dense, with a thick undercoat that creates the breed's signature plush "teddy bear" texture. The most famous color is British Blue (solid blue-gray with copper-orange eyes), but the breed is recognized in over 25 colors including black, white, cream, red, blue cream, silver, gold, colorpoint, tabby, and bicolor variants. Eye color varies with coat color but is typically copper, orange, or gold for solid coats and blue or green for silver and colorpoint variants.

Health considerations

British Shorthairs are generally robust with a long lifespan of 14–20 years, but two hereditary conditions deserve attention: hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) and polycystic kidney disease (PKD). Both can be screened for genetically. At Pet Therapy, every British Shorthair Queen and Sire is screened for HCM and PKD before breeding, and we obtain echocardiograms on adult breeding cats every 1–2 years as a secondary check. British Shorthairs can also be prone to dental issues and obesity (their low energy level means they'll happily over-eat if allowed), so feeding portion control and annual dental checks are part of responsible long-term care.

Why choose a Pet Therapy British Shorthair

Pet Therapy's British Shorthair program is built for long-term health. Every breeding pair is dual-screened for HCM and PKD, and we maintain veterinary echo records on adult cats. Our kittens go home no earlier than 10–12 weeks of age — early enough to bond with you, late enough to be fully socialized and weaned from their mother. We hand-raise every litter in our family home so kittens arrive confident around adults, children, and other pets. Every kitten ships with TICA or CFA paperwork, a vet-checked health record, and a 1-year written genetic health guarantee covering hereditary and congenital conditions. We deliver via professional flight nanny to all US states except Hawaii.
